What is cancer?

Cancer is a disease with over 100 different types depending on the cells’ locations where it starts. The disease causes your cells to grow and divide uncontrollably, eventually crowding out normal healthy cells. 

There are two main categories of cancer that require different approaches to treatment:

Blood cancers

Blood cancers affect your white blood cells, which your bone marrow produces. There are three different types: leukemia, lymphoma, and myeloma.

Tumor cancers

Tumor cancers originate in your organs or tissues, often resulting in the growth of a solid mass called a tumor. A few of the most common are breast cancer, skin cancer, prostate cancer, and lung cancer.

Some cancers grow slowly and remain confined to their original locations, while others grow quickly and metastasize (spread) throughout your body.

What cancer screenings might I need?

Dr. Jarrett’s Wellness Center offers cancer screenings for various types, including:

Screening tests help you get an early diagnosis if you have cancer, which can greatly improve your treatment outcome. Cancer is more treatable in its earliest stages when it hasn’t metastasized.

What is cancer care?

Cancer care is the education, support, and treatment you receive after you get a cancer diagnosis. At Dr. Jarrett’s Wellness Center, you can get personalized health care for your cancer as well as therapeutic spa services for your comfort. 

You come in regularly to visit with the team as you go through treatment for cancer; they coordinate your care with your oncologist. Your cancer care plan is entirely personalized and depends on your type of cancer and its stage, but may involve some combination of:

• Radiation therapy

• Immunotherapy

• Targeted therapy

• Stem cell treatments

• Cancer surgery

Dr. Jarrett’s Wellness Center provides massage therapy and nutritional supplements. While these strategies won’t treat your cancer, they can help with cancer pain and general feelings of unwellness that come with the disease.

What are the possible results of cancer care?

It’s normal to feel very overwhelmed after getting a cancer diagnosis, especially if you don’t know much about your cancer type or what the treatment involves. Fortunately, many people find success with cancer care and go on to live life cancer-free.
