Women's Health Q & A

What is women’s health?

Women’s health includes all the conditions and problems a woman might experience related to her reproductive organs, sexual health, and female genetics.

Looking after yourself and preventing illness is the best way to keep fit and healthy, regardless of your gender. The team at Dr. Jarrett’s Wellness Center believes in doing the best for their patients by promoting a healthy lifestyle and supporting them in making changes such as losing weight, eating more healthily, and getting the correct amount of sleep and exercise.

Each patient is an individual, and there’s no one-size-fits-all solution, so you always receive tailored care and advice from the team at Dr. Jarrett’s Wellness Center.

Why would I need a women’s health exam?

Seeing a doctor for a women’s health exam helps you monitor the health of your reproductive organs, including your vagina, breasts, uterus, and ovaries.

Conditions that might have you consider a women’s health exam include:

  • Issues with fertility
  • Chronic pelvic pain
  • Pain during intercourse
  • Birth control
  • Pregnancy
  • Autoimmune issues
  • Menopause
  • Fatigue

The team at Dr. Jarrett’s Wellness Center aims to identify what’s causing your symptoms and then correct them with a holistic approach to treatment.

For example, if you’re going through menopause and experiencing uncomfortable symptoms, your provider may recommend hormone replacement therapy.

What is a well-woman exam?

During a well-woman exam, your provider reviews your health and well-being and carries out a breast and pelvic exam to pick up any problems with your reproductive organs. You also have a Pap smear, if you need one, to check for any changes in cervical cells that could indicate the onset of cervical cancer.

At your well-woman exam, you can discuss a range of issues and have various tests to check for early signs of health problems, including:

  • Cancer screening
  • Diabetes
  • High blood pressure
  • Bone density
  • Mental health
  • Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs)
  • Sexual issues
  • Weight control
  • Problems with periods
  • Menopause
  • Incontinence
  • Effects of aging
  • Emotional difficulties

You can also discuss birth control options with your provider and have any immunizations you need, such as the flu or HPV (human papillomavirus).

What happens during a well-woman exam?

At your well-woman exam, your provider begins by talking with you about how you’re feeling and any problems you’re experiencing. When you’re ready, they will examine you from head to toe, as well as carry out the internal exam.

You lie back on an examination table and relax while your provider inserts the speculum, a special instrument that holds the vaginal walls open. This enables your provider to feel inside your vagina for any anomalies and take some cells from your cervix for laboratory analysis. The team also examines your breasts to check for lumps.
